Assalamualaikum
A wise person once said "don't have any expectation, it would hurt you,". Another wise person said "be optimistic the best is yet to come,". Both are equally true but contradicting each other.
It is true that expectation...hurts. You could try to manage your expectation, expect for the lowest thing that could happen, but even then, humans are fascinating...Just when you thought that you've foresee the worst, they surprise you with things lower than the worst you could ever imagine.
It is also true that optimism is good for our mental health. With optimism, even if everything goes wrong with our life, at the moment, we believe that the best is yet to come...there'll be some silver lining in every hardship.
So, in a nutshell,
Optimism = expecting you'll have better future
but
Expectation = Hurt
Dilemma.
However, one thing I learn from growing up, when it's time, we have to decide. I understand it's hard. What if you choose something that turns out to be bad for you or you let go of something that you'll regret later on? The fear is real. This is life. Life is always about choices and taking responsibility of your choices. Being indecisive, procrastinating decision making, is the worst thing you could do to yourself. The irony is, you fear making decision because you're scared that your own decision might bite you in future but the thing is, being indecisive hurts you now and your future. You'll never be happy with where you are/will be because none of it is what you choose but you'll also regret things that you did not choose.
See. Life is simple. We're the one who complicated life.
So to wrap up, in a battle between optimism and not expecting, I choose optimism.
